Knowledge Organisers
In this section...Knowledge Organisers have been devised as a multi-purpose tool to assist teachers in their planning and assessments, Subject Leaders in their evaluations of standards in their subjects and parents to have a fuller understanding of the knowledge their child will cover each term and how they can support them to remember this.
At Barrow Hedges, we emphasise the importance of children needing to regularly revisit their prior knowledge to make links in their learning and to help them to remember more. This is referred to as ‘sticky knowledge’ which is important in two ways:
Firstly, the more a child knows, the more their knowledge can stick to their existing knowledge (building schemas).
Secondly, we want their knowledge to stick! To ensure that this is the case, children must keep retrieving existing knowledge from their long-term memories in order to interrupt forgetting.
Therefore, the children will use the knowledge organisers in class to help them remember key facts from their themed learning. We encourage parents to spend some time looking at them with their child(ren) at home too.
In Early Years, Knowledge Organisers support the following areas of learning:
- Communication and Language
- Literacy (Reading, Writing and Phonics Knowledge)
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
